Archive overhauled

Many improvements.

Missing comments added, color coding fixed, chronological disorder fixed, formatting improved, duplicate comments removed, repetetive boilerplate removed. This took hours. The chronological disorder was bad because the archive was originally assembled in a mad flurry of activity: I scraped comments in small batches even as NewScientist scrambled to delete them.

SIAM president attacks El Naschie and Ji-Huan He!

I have just learned of this very major development. Francis the Mule is all over this for the Spanish language science blogosphere. At the moment, the pdf from Siam News, Volume 42, Number 10, December 2009, can be downloaded here, but who knows how long that will last. Get it while you can.

Douglas N. Arnold, the president of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) calls out El Naschie and Ji-Huan He for their impact-factor shenanigans. He calls the cases "appalling" and "clear-cut".

Will El Naschie sue? It seems hopeless for him. Arnold's statements are dry and factual, and he was aware of El Naschie's history as a legal bully when he wrote them. Also, the suit would probably have to be brought in the United States, a much less friendly venue than England where he brought the Nature suit, and probably less friendly than Germany where he sued Die Zeit.

People are losing their fear, and that means Dr. M.S. El Naschie is in big trouble.

Integrity Under Attack:
The State of Scholarly Publishing
By Douglas N. Arnold

Scientific journals are surely important. They provide the most effective means for disseminating and archiving scientific results, and so are a key part of an enterprise on which our health, security, and prosperity ultimately depend. Publications are used by universities, funding agencies, and others as a primary measure of research productivity and impact. They play a decisive role in hiring, promotion, and salary decisions, and in the ranking of departments, institutions, even nations. With big rewards tied to publication, it is not surprising that some people engage in unethical behavior, abuse, and downright fraud. Still, when I started to look at the issues more closely, I was appalled by what I found. In this column, I give a few troubling examples of misconduct by authors and by journals in applied mathematics. One conclusion I draw is that common bibliometrics—such as the impact factor for journals and citation counts for authors—are easily manipulated not only in theory, but also in practice, and that their use in ranking and judging should be curtailed.

SIAM places great value on scholarly publishing, of course, and we are taking strong actions to ensure the integrity of our own publications and to protect our authors from theft of their work. But we are still struggling to decide just what actions we should take. So I invite the thoughts of members of the SIAM community. If you have witnessed troubling incidents in journal publication, let me know. Do you think such incidents are on the rise? Should SIAM be doing more? Should we look beyond our own publications and authors?

Author misconduct—most obviously verbatim plagiarism, but also more subtle appropriation of ideas and duplicate publication—has always been with us. At SIAM, however, our impression is that the problem is becoming far more common. Perhaps even more disturbing is journal misconduct, carried out by publishers and editors, often with an evident profit motive. One example is a sloppy or sham peer review process designed to produce the impression of a serious scholarly journal without the substance. Another is the deliberate manipulation of citation statistics in order to raise the impact factor or other journal bibliometrics.

A recent case involving SIAM brings in both author and journal misconduct. A paper published in a SIAM journal in 2008 was plagiarized essentially verbatim from a preprint version posted by the authors on the web. A copied version of the paper appeared in the International Journal of Statistics and Systems in the same year with different title and authors. SIAM's publisher, vice president for publications, executive director, and I undertook a full investigation, which required nearly six months. The case got messier and more disturbing week by week. I decided that our final report on it should be made fully public; it is available on the web, where you can read the details.[1]

Meanwhile, here are some of the sad conclusions. Based on the papers that we reviewed, we determined that the suspect authors had committed plagiarism in this and various other cases. At least four articles published under their names in four different journals are essentially verbatim copies of the articles of other authors, and we have reason to believe that there are other cases as well. The journal publisher, Research India Publications, publishes nearly 50 journals, many related to applied mathematics, but did not respond to our inquiries about the plagiarized article. We contacted the editor-in-chief listed on the journal web page, but he himself has been unable to contact the journal! After learning about this incident from us, he submitted his resignation to the journal but has received no response from the publisher; his name, along with those of numerous other distinguished mathematicians, remains on the journal website.

Rumors of editor and journal misconduct have dominated the highly publicized case of the applied math journal Chaos, Solitons and Fractals (CSF), published by Elsevier. As reported in a 2008 article in Nature,[2] “Five of the 36 papers in the December issue of Chaos, Solitons and Fractals alone were written by its editor-in-chief, Mohamed El Naschie. And the year to date has seen nearly 60 papers written by him appear in the journal.” In fact, of the 400 papers by El Naschie indexed in Web of Science, 307 were published in CSF while he was editor-in-chief. This extremely high rate of selfpublication by the editor-in-chief led to charges that normal standards of peer-review were not upheld at CSF; it has also had a large effect on the journal’s impact factor. (Thomson Reuters calculates the impact factor of a journal in a given year as C/A, where A is the number of articles published in the journal in the preceding two years, and C is the number of citations to those articles from articles indexed in the Thomson Reuters database and published in the given year.) El Naschie’s papers in CSF make 4992 citations, about 2000 of which are to papers published in CSF, largely his own. In 2007, of the 65 journals in the Thomson Reuters category “Mathematics, Interdisciplinary Applications,” CSF was ranked number 2.

Another journal whose high impact factor raises eyebrows is the International Journal of Nonlinear Science and Numerical Simulation (IJNSNS), founded in 2000 and published by Freund Publishing House. For the past three years, IJNSNS has had the highest impact factor in the category “Mathematics, Applied.” There are a variety of connections between IJNSNS and CSF. For example, Ji-Huan He, the founder and editor-in-chief of IJNSNS, is an editor of CSF, and El Naschie is one of the two co-editors of CSF; both publish copiously, not only in their own journals but also in each other's, and they cite each other frequently.

Let me describe another element that contributes to IJNSNS's high impact factor. The Institute of Physics (IOP) publishes Journal of Physics: Conference Series (JPCS). Conference organizers pay to have proceedings of their conferences published in JPCS, and, in the words of IOP, “JPCS asks Conference Organisers to handle the peer review of all papers.” Neither the brochure nor the website for JPCS lists an editorial board, nor does either describe any process for judging the quality of the conferences. Nonetheless, Thomson Reuters counts citations from JPCS in calculating impact factors. One of the 49 volumes of JPCS in 2008 was the proceedings of a conference organized by IJNSNS editor-in-chief He at his home campus, Shanghai Donghua University. This one volume contained 221 papers, with 366 references to papers in IJNSNS and 353 references to He. To give you an idea of the effect of this, had IJNSNS not received a single citation in 2008 beyond the ones in this conference proceedings, it would still have been assigned a larger impact factor than any SIAM journal except for SIAM Review.

Another example of journal misconduct was revealed with an element of comedy. In “‘CRAP’ paper accepted for publication,” published online in June in Science News, senior editor Janet Raloff[3] described an experiment in which Cornell graduate student Philip Davis and a friend used a computer program, SCIgen [Our post Deconstructing the Lookaside Buffer used SCIgen. -Ed], to generate a random document; the grammar and vocabulary were those of a 2 computer science research paper, but the document was completely free of meaningful content. (The paper opens, “Compact symmetries and compilers have garnered tremendous interest from both futurists and biologists in the last several years. The flaw of this type of solution, however, is that DHTs can be made empathic, large-scale, and extensible.'' Four pages later, it concludes, “We expect to see many futurists move to studying TriflingThamyn in the very near future.” Indeed!) The paper was submitted to The Open Information Science Journal (TOISCIJ), published by Bentham Science, a publisher of more than 200 open-access scientific journals (many of which, according to the publisher’s website, have high impact factors). Although the paper was submitted under pseudonyms and with the give-away affiliation Center for Research in Applied Phrenology, or CRAP, Davis was notified four months later that the “submitted article has been accepted for publication after peer-reviewing process in TOISCIJ.” Following the open-access model, the publisher told the authors that the paper would be published as soon as they sent a check for $800. (They declined to do so.)

The cases I have recounted are appalling, but clear-cut. Perhaps even more dangerous are the less obvious cases: publishers who do not do away with peer review, but who adjust it according to nonscientific factors; journals that may not engage in wide-scale and systematic self-citation, but that apply subtle pressures on authors and editors to adjust citations in favor of the journal, rather than based on scholarly grounds; authors who may not steal text verbatim, but who lift ideas without giving proper credit. These are much harder to measure and adjudicate. What do you think? Are such practices significantly distorting the scientific literature or enterprise? Do you have a story of such dubious practices to tell?

One conclusion that I am ready to draw is that we need to back away from the use of bibliometrics like the impact factor in judging scientific quality. It has long been noted that what the impact factor measures is not well correlated with the quality of a journal, and even much less with the scientific quality of the papers appearing in it or of the authors of those papers. In our field, the 2008 IMUICIAM-IMS report Citation Statistics[4] made that case eloquently. Less emphasized has been that these metrics are open to gaming, and are in fact being gamed; in some cases they are likely a better indicator of the unscrupulousness of the authors, editors, or publishers than of the quality of their work. Frequently, I hear of technical solutions, proposed in the hope that an adjustment to the formula—for example, increasing the time frame for the impact factor from 2 to 5 years, or excluding self-citations— will solve the problem. Such remedies, in my opinion, are doomed to failure. The numbers of citations to mathematical articles are small integers, with excellent papers often drawing lifetime totals of only tens or hundreds of citations, and such numbers are easily manufactured. What one editor can do in one journal by self-citation, a pair of editors can do with two journals without self-citation. Counting can never replace expert opinion.

What can we, as concerned scientists, do? Of course, the first step is to look to ourselves: As scientists, we should place great emphasis on scientific integrity, in what we write and what we review. Ask yourself some questions before lending your name to a journal as an editor. Does that journal hew to high standards of peer review? Does it have clear policies and mechanisms for enforcing them? Is its output a useful addition to the sprawling scientific literature? We also need to educate others, not only our students, but also our colleagues and administrators and managers. The next time you are in a situation where a publication count, or a citation number, or an impact factor is brought in as a measure of quality, raise an objection. Let people know how easily these can be, and are being, manipulated. We need to look at the papers themselves, the nature of the citations, and the quality of the journals. Impotent rage against "Dirty Martin"...

Anonymous admonishes "Brother blogger Karim" for allowing anti El Naschie comments. As El Naschie's sockpuppets usually do, Anonymous attributes the criticism of El Naschie to the black sheep brother Said Elnashaie (Jihan Fadel's stepdad).

Nasser equates Martin Klicken with the "stepson prison thief" Elnaschaie. He then lashes out at Ahmed Zewail (1, 2) for whom Nasser has contempt like no other contempt "under the sun". Nasser's implication is that the "thief" Ahmed Zewail stole the Nobel that El Naschie deserved.

We have preserved many comments that the frustrated NewScientist Webmaster deleted, and in fact even the heavily redacted comment set is no longer publicly viewable at NewScientist's Web site.

That SCIAM comment archive is one of the largest and most popular. Jerzy Jurkiewicz, Renate Loll and Jan Ambjorn wrote a Scientific American article called Using Causality to Solve the Puzzle of Quantum Spacetime that attracted many comments. El Naschie's supporters thought the authors appropriated his ideas without attribution, and were furious. The Webmaster deleted scores of comments, but they are preserved in our archive.

From Cairo with love preserves some of the choicest comments from two blogs. One is Ben Webster's L'affaire El Naschie on Secret Blogging Seminar. The other is Stefan and Bee's Chaos, Solitons and Self-Promotion on Backreaction.

A date which will live in infamousy

On December 8th, 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt addressed the U.S. Congress, calling Japan's bombing of Pearl Harbor on the previous day "a date which will live in infamy". It's a famous, stirring speech, well-known to all but the most callow Americans. The British equivalent is Winston Churchill's "We shall fight on the beaches."

On December 8th, 2009, 68 years later to the very day, a sockpuppet going by the name "Gassem" epically failed to invoke the the oratory of Roosevelt with this comment at Mailund.dk:

Thilo Kuessner's "Nichts gelernt bei Elsevier"

If you, dear readers, enjoy El Naschie's ranting sockpuppets as much as I do, then you should drop whatever you're doing and click on over to Thilo's place.

That thread is a true El Naschie Watch style classic, and the only reason the comment section isn't archived here is that Thilo can be trusted to preserve it.

I think El naschie is too foolish, he entered the trap and then he can't retreat. He started to sue nature, that is a great giant, and at the end he will loose. For him, it would be much better if he started to break the ring from the weakest point, for example starting by John Baez or Peter Woit who clearly stated that his works are mere garbage. But doing that way has a dilemma, namely focusing on a small target which still costs much and with a little benefit. It is like firing a tent in a desert with rocket of 1 Million Dollars. Any decision El naschie would decide would have brought him a disaster. That is foolishness has no remedy at all. El naschie has a lot of foolishness.

Comment of the month

I've just updated The Sockpuppets Soldier On, which is our archive of the comments on Becky Jungbauer's "You're a mean one, Mr. El Naschie".

Today a comment was posted there by one A. Hammad which distills everything objectionable about El Naschie's supporters into a rich elixir of anti-Western hatred, victimology, and misspelling. Even global politics and petroleum macroeconomics are incorporated, as Hammad advances the thesis that market purchase at $73.80 per barrel equals taking by force.

Ladies and gentlemen, here is our commenter of the month, A. Hammad:

The case of El Naschie versus Nature has progressed quite a bit since the last article in the Press Gazette by Lyssa [sic] Limrick [sic... There once was a writer named Lyssa, etc.]. You should check the High Court. El Naschie is a victim of a well planned defamation campaign to divert from a scandal in scientific American caused by an article on Fractal spacetime in 2008. We in the Gulf area know exactly what this is all about. When you in the West want our oil, you take it by force. Now you want to take our pride. You want us to doubt our people. You will not get what you want. Whether Prof.El Naschie wins this case or not, we believe him. We have no trust whatsoever in those who are behind the Nature tabloid article.

We discussed the Erdferkel thread previously at Wall of text crits for over 9000.

Erdferkel's September 5, 2009 post has a link to Michael Wachonski's comment on the March 2, 2009 post, which is where the serious laughs begin. El Naschie's sockpuppet "David" = "Sharif" = "Clive" = "Anon" is weak on the IP concept.

The graphic is based on a 1969 movie called Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice, which, as far as I know, I've never seen.

Oh no you don't!

An observant reader has noticed that an Islam Today interview with El Naschie is throwing away comments critical of The Great Man. We fortunately provide a home for the banished words. For completeness, we present the article in its entirety, followed by the comments.

Red text in this particular archive is text that Islam Today magazine threw out. It is entirely critical of El Naschie, with the exception of the short pro El Naschie comment of 12:29:00 2009 /12/01 (which was eliminated presumably because it was a response to anti El Naschie material, and would have been incomprehensible without that context).

إطلاقًا لا أتفق مع هذا الرأي, وذلك لأنني لم أبتعد, ولكن تَمَّ إبعادي عن كافة مجالات ودوائر البحث العلمي بمصر, كما أن ما يحدث حاليًّا من تجاهل للبحث العلمي في البلاد يُنبِئ بكثيرٍ من الفشل والتراجع عن ملاحقة التقدُّم العلميِّ الحاصل في دول العالم, فضلًا عمَّا تشهده منطقة الخليج من تقدُّم, هو الأبرز عربيًّا. من الضروري تجنب البيروقراطية, ومراعاة التوظيف الأمثل للكوادر القائمة, ومراعاة تحسين الأوضاع السياسية, وتجنب تدنِّيها, ووضع إستراتيجية للنهوض بالتجربة العلمية في كافة مجالاتها. أتصوَّر أن الأسباب مادية بالدرجة الأولى, بالإضافة إلى عدم توفُّر البيئة الملائمة للبحث العلميّ, سواء في مصر أو في بعض الدول العربية, على نحو ما أشَرت, باستثناء دول الخليج, التي تسعى إلى استقطاب العلماء والباحثين, من خلال حسن المعاملة وتعزيز الجانب المادي. Currently, I have some of the efforts and projects of Arab States, in all countries of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Lebanon, Qatar, all in order to achieve scientific progress in such countries, as part of the Arab world.

وأين تضع السياق السياسي في إحداث التطور العلمي لأيّ دولة؟ And where she would place the political context in bringing the scientific development of any country?

لا شكّ أنه مهمّ للغاية, ومن الضروري أن تكون هناك إرادة سياسية لخدمة الأغراض العلمية, وبالطريقة القائمة في بعض البلاد العربية, لأن هناك, ولا شكّ, العديد من الجوانب التي يمكن أن تهدّد البحث العلمي, وهي عدم الشفافية وانتشار الفساد. للأسف مجلة الإسلام اليوم ؛ لا توجد فيما يظهر لي فيها لجان علمية محكمة للمقالات واللقاءات.. من السهل أن تنشر لكن الجودة مفقودة. الغارديان البريطانية كتبت مقالاً في صفحة البحث العلمي في المجلة عن النشائي وكشفت تزييفه ؛ عن نفسي لا أستطيع أن أحكم لكن مجلة بقدر الغارديان البريطانية إن صدقت فهو غالب ما فيها من مهنية ، وإن أخطأت في حق النشائي فإبمكانه أن يقلب الدنيا عليهم رأساً على عقب عن طريق قنوات قضائية. على هذا الموقع المبارك أن يحسن النشر ولا يكتفي بكون الأستاذ كان رئيساً لجامعة القصيم ؛ موطن المجلة. خالص تحياتي طلال ليدز Unfortunately, Islam Today magazine; there does not appear to me the scientific committees of the Court of articles and interviews .. it is easy to deploy but the quality is missing. قراءة المقالة و اجدها جيدة جدا ولكن عندما شاهدت التعليقات وجدا انا هناك سوء نيه مبيت تجاه الدكتور محمد النشائى . Here is an elaboration of Martin Klicken's comments in English:

If you are interested in current and comprehensive information on the case of El Naschie, why not try simply googling "El Naschie," for example. Or read more on the El Naschie Watch blog or in the German courts. This is a case that's at least close to fraud in science.

There is no conspiracy against El Naschie. He has systematically lied and cheated. He vilifies or sues anyone who exposes him. In the German courts El Naschie has already lost his libel case against the weekly newspaper "Die Zeit". El Naschie wanted Die Zeit to print a retraction; he won't get it. Die Zeit sued El Naschie to stop claiming that the El Naschie Watch blog had anything to do with Die Zeit (he had written defamatory letters to the editor-in-chief and to former German chancellor Helmut Schmidt who is on the Die Zeit board). Die Zeit won, and El Naschie lost.

All this has nothing to do with predjudice for or against any nationality; it's a matter of scientific dishonesty. The entire scientific world ignored him at first, in fact for decades, but he never ceased printing nonsensical publications in his own Elsevier journal, "Chaos, Solitons and Fractals". This fraudulent conduct is damaging to honest scientists, particularly in the Arab world.

The Arab world is well advised to open up and pay attention to the rest of the scientific world in order to obtain growth and strength in the sciences. And the Arab media must challenge El Naschie with hard questions. El Naschie's wealth, and his lust for power and prestige, have made the greedy Arabic media his lapdog for many years, especially in Egypt. Hello Egypt!

I knew Egypt would discover El Naschie Watch eventually.

On March 2, 2009 I remarked "The Egyptians have hardly noticed. When they do, the shit will hit the fan."

On March 4, 2009, Egypt rated tenth in number of visitors. Just ahead of Romania, in fact. Negligible.

Things have changed. By number of pageloads, Egypt has moved into fourth place.

They now account for more than eight percent.

El Naschie's recent return to Egypt is almost certainly an attempt to shore up his crumbling reputation. He can no longer count on the press for fawning, softball interviews. El Naschie Watch is making a difference. We read the visitor log, so we know.

Wait a minute, "Buddy". Go read the front page of El Naschie's Website. Full professor, check. Theoretical physicist, check. Affiliated with numerous universities, check. But he completely forgot to mention the part about being a hobbyist and an amateur! Totally slipped his mind.

So, "Buddy", which characterization of El Naschie is correct? Yours? Or El Naschie's?

LOL. Yours is, of course! El Naschie is a rich hobbyist who founded Chaos, Solitons and Fractals as his personal vanity journal. Unlike most of El Naschie's critics, I don't have a problem with him doing that or with him being the silly amateur he is. There are lots of fine hobbyists and amateurs. But very few of them put up Websites claiming to be full professors. And give media interviews blaming racism for not getting the Nobel Prize. That's what annoys me.

I preferred the old style in-your-face Naschienal Socialists. They had balls, at least.

Those Hidden Pressgazette Comments

A small treasure!

The comments we have archived here were posted by readers of the article Editor of Scientific Journal Sues Nature. However, and this is what makes this archive particularly valuable, there is some misconfiguration of the DISQUS comment system at Pressgazette. It may be a simple programming error, a botched attempt at comment deletion, or something else. The effect is that scraping these eight comments (more if we find more) was tricky. Nowhere else on the Internet will you find the small but perfectly formed archive we here at El Naschie Watch have the pleasure of presenting to you, our loyal readers.

Pro El Naschie material is color coded green.

I have marked in red those posts whose actual author is "highenergy" in spite of the fake names used to sign them. We know this because highenergy's profile contains the list of posts he or she made, and the names used. Highenergy screwed up bigtime. Props to Shrink for smoking him out. If this claim goes through it will have the effect, that any author who is not content with the refereeing result of his paper will sue the journal he sent it to.

This then would be the end of the present traditional refereeing system.
This system assumes that author and referee and publisher/editor are three different persons.

A way out would be to let the journal be Open Access, that is provide a publicly accessible digital copy on the web at no charge and no barriers. Then all colleagues and experts can discuss the paper,- all but one will be not the author..

Not to be misunderstood: In many journals the editor is publishing in the journal, he edits or is publisher; nothing wrong with it; but it is fair and a good and well established tradition that these papers are marked, - a comment added - that this is a file by the editor, and is not refereed by third persons.
Finally, an editor has to take the full responsibility for his professional work, that means here: if the reputation of his journal goes down due to articles published which have the editor as author and not marked that this is an editorial, than this negative result is just part of the system: to assure that it does not happen too often.

Sarah Limbrick would surely be interested to know what the leading libel expert in England had to say about the Nature article complained of. He said he is in a state of disbelief that the worlds most respectable scientific journal Nature should publish an article which bears all the hallmarks of the tabloid press. Another interesting point is the conspiracy theory linking the plagiarism of El Naschies work published in Scientific American with the Nature article as well as a far worse article published in Die Zeit. Interestingly all of these three publications are owned by Macmillan. I understand from confidential sources that a mega surprise will be released at the trial engulfing highly reputed names some of whom are Nobel laureates.

The astonishing thing about El naschie is that he
could survive for a quite long time in Europe and remained as a Cheif editor of CS&F for almost nearly twenty years.

Also, I think he managed to damage the reputation of Cambridge to some extent by publishing numerous non sense papers using its affiliation.

Furthermore, he damaged the reputation of Nobel laureate G. Thooft when he dedicated some of his non sense papers to G. Thooft - (On quarks confinement and asymptotic freedom Chaos,Solitons and Fractals 37 (2008)1289–1291)-
, surprisingly enough Thooft kept silent about this. I think even a third class physicist wouldn't be happy if El naschie dedicated one of his non sense paper to him, and for sure he would complain and sue El naschie.

It is a tempting suggestion to invoke the issue to sue Elsevier and El naschie for damaging the reputation of scientific publishing. I think that the respectable institutes, universities and research centers that paid for that junk CS&F must sue Elsevier and El naschie and asking for penalties.

I think that Elsevier is doing dirty jobs in scientific publishing. The CSF journal is owned by Elnaschie and Elsevier is getting money out of this apart from the journal subscription fees. El naschie pays for getting credibility of Elsevier and to have the chance to publish his great scientific ideas in journal hosted by a supposed reputable publishing house like Elsevier. There are other many similar cases in Elsevier.
El naschie keeps publishing junks in CSF for a quite long time and kept unnoticed by mentoring system of Elsevier which seems very odd. While it was so obvious from the far beginning that we have a crackpot.
The same applies to Cambridge university which allowed him to publish his articles for nearly ten years 1993-2001 using its affiliation, while, for sure, he wasn t a staff member there. It is far from reality to imagine that people in Cambridge have been fooled for that long time. According to the following data base

The papers of El naschie would be a permanent black record for both Elsevier and Cambridge for too long time in the future.

A lone single handed and with his own money.
He has managed to corrupt Elsevier for almost twenty
years, 1992-2009. He has published few hundered (347)
non sense articles in CSF. Up till now, Elsevier can not

the recent article of 2009 in CSF, which is a good sign.

This is probably the first time in history, someone let alone an Editor in Chief takes Nature to Court. The Nature article would undoubtedly have caused someone like Charles Darwin to turn in his grave. Charlie Chaplin would have called it modern times. I call it bad times, when something as big and great as Nature descends to the level of Schiermeier’s article. Incidentally El Naschie is not taking only Nature to Court. He is taking Macmillan to Court. That means he is taking Scientific American, Nature and Die Zeit to Court. Anyone who can put the pieces together will get the point.

It seems to me to be an extremely uneven battle when a multinational like Macmillan defame via Nature a simple university professor. Nature and therefore Macmillan must stand on the side of their irresponsible journalist, assuming he was irresponsible. The only thing left for the simple professor is the Court of law but this does not come free of charge. A trial of this kind can cost as much as half a million pounds if not more. The professor will have to mortgage his life and he is unlikely to spare half a million pounds given university salaries. By contrast ten million pounds are peanuts for Macmillan and the like of Macmillan. Where is justice? Do you not see that our system is extremely faulty? If no legal aid is given to the professor, which is rarely done, he has not a chance in hell to win against this scientific bullying.

It is not only funding. I think pretigious prizes play a fundamental role. I heard that the Nobel prize is involved. Sometime ago it was written that not even the devil could have thought of something worse than the Nobel prize particularly for science. It is not the Nobel prize money. It is what comes after the Nobe prize. The razmataz. Som Institutions could do with some razmataz. They translate that into hard cash. Did you hear about the scandals with some Ivy Leagues in the USA? I am sure you did. Why should Einstein Institute or for that matter the University of Utrecht be above those things. The names involved in this story are quite interesting. I would not be astonished if some best sellers are going to be written about this story in the next few years. This could be fine for some and even lucrative. On the other hand, try as I may, I cannot fathom how the Editor in Chief of Nature could allow this tabloid piece to be published. Maybe I have too much respect for Nature. I used to have too much respect for the Nobel committee too. This is all too sad. Nothing is sacred any more in this world. Nature will have a hard time however proving that Mohamed El Naschie acted in self interest. The man had fame and money long before he ever published a paper in theoretical physics. Thereis something wrong with his brain however. Any person who leaves a successful career in engineering to become a theoretical physicist should have his head checked.

It is not just a matter of funding which is behind the defamatory article in Nature. I think prestigious prizes also play a fundamental role. I read that somewhere on the net but strangely it was removed. The prize in question seems to be the Nobel Prize. Somebody wrote yesterday that he would not be astonished if a best seller comes out of this horrific story in the next few years. It is alright for some. The same writer said try as hard as he can, he simply cannot fathom how the Editor in Chief of Nature could allow this tabloid piece to be published in his journal. He must have his reasons or he had a very deep snooze. He added that he may have had too much respect for Nature just as he used to have for the Nobel Committee. This implies that he has none any longer which is interesting. Look the reason you get something that looks fairytailish when you look at a smaller and smaller scale... Is simple. Everything works the way it works... When you try to define the way something works your perspective itself shapes how you see it work. As a race of beings we cant understand something we are not ready to understand. Yet we will be trying to understand everything as beings. If you could remove yourself from your own perspective you could understand something elses own perspective possibly but untill then no. This is part of what makes us human and also part of what that makes our science wrong.

Of course, and ideal gas is the simplest representation of every entropic system. We shouldn't replace natural phenomena by abstract concepts, because lost of general insight, connections and information. If we are saying, "quantum mechanics is of entropic character", we can deduce another atributes of quantum mechanic systems, because these systems share many common aspects of their behavior, not just probability or entropy distribution. Density fluctuations of gas have shape of strings and membranes and many other atributes, which can be predicted/computed by this model.

This is the reason, AWT doesn't assume some particular number of dimensions, it considers virtually infinite number of dimensions and lets the probability and geometric constrains to limits the number of dimensions.

For example, the density fluctuations inside of gas aren't always flat. If the gas is sparse, they have rather spherical character. After then we can model fluctuations as a system of kissing hypersheres, where just the 3D hypersheres allows the most compact distribution. This determines the number of spatial dimensions of our space-time. It appears as so large, because it's the most compact one possible.

Inside of more dense gas, though, a less compact density fluctuations appears: membranes and strings. The lower number of space-dimensions is compensates by increasing number of time dimensions and the system becomes chaotic from our 3D perspective. Therefore our view of reality doesn't differ from perspective, which "would see" some 3D fluctuation of gas, when interacting with other fluctuations (strings, branes or hyperspheres).

In general, we should decide question, if we want to adhere to "4D-only" space-time and "four fundamental forces" model to handle all violations of inverse square law like "natural nonlinearities", "gravity lensing" or "dispersion phenomena" - while still looking for "hidden dimensions" and "Lorentz symmetry violations". Because every nonlinearity from ISL IS a manifestation of hidden dimensions, in fact.

This is radical new approach to reality, but I'm convinced, we cannot consider both variants at the same moment from consistency reasons. For example, we shouldn't expect/look for hidden dimensions and Lorentz invariance at the same moment.

Have we disproved gravity's action at a distance? Doesn't gravity's "faster than light" interaction imply that it is a property of space as a medium rather than an object within that medium? By medium, I'm simply talking about the laws of nature/physics, the framework. It always seems to me that the interesting question that no one seems to have the answer to, is how does matter interact with and thus alter the medium? How can mass warp space? The idea of a fractal dimension is interesting in that it could explain the variability of the medium given the influence of matter, if someone could explain how energy influences a variable in the fractal equation.

It's been claimed that a successful experiment has measured the speed of gravity at the speed of light. There is no "faster than light" interaction.

Regarding how mass can warp space(time)...

Imagine a rubber sheet stretched over a frame - like a drum. If you compact an area of the sheet, it becomes denser - that's your mass. The area of the sheet surrounding the mass is your "warping" of spacetime - gravity.

When this analogy is usually delivered, it is said "the mass is sitting on top of the rubber sheet..."

This is a mistake... Mass and spacetime are not separate entities, they are one in the same, but simply density fluctuations of the "medium."

If you imagine this concept in three dimensions, you'll have a much more accurate picture of reality.

In my private opinion, while many ideas of prof. Naschie are self-referencing and anticipating their own results, he is on good track. The main problem is, no general theory should consider relativity and quantum mechanics, i.e. theories, which we don't understand deeply. Everything, what we can be completelly sure is 4D geometry of space-time.

At the moment, we use combination of ad-hoced theories of uncertain consistency scope, we can be never sure by relevance of output to observable reality. The fuzinness of such approach isn't in its formal rigor, but the postulate consistency. We simply don't know, if postulates of relativity and quantum mechanics plays together, which ones are inconsistent or redundant, and so on.

If we don't understand the nature of fundamental elements, which is wrong - we should build a general theory from our local experience, which is perfectly known and understood - despite the fact, the assumptions, which are more distant from our everyday reality can provide a "more numbers" temporarily.

We should realize, no ad-hoced idea can serve as an explanation, until we have understood its causual base. In AWT the fractality of Universe is consequence of its multicomponent nature of gradient driven reality, i.e. the fact, every object here is a gradient, formed by density fluctuations of many other objects. These gradients - no matter, how strangely they may appear from proximity - can be extrapolated like countable, i.e. colliding pin-point particles, when observed from sufficient distance and their fields can be interpreted like mutually penetrating hyperspheres of various diameter.

By this way, observable reality appears/can be modeled like density fluctuations of very dense gas (interior of black hole) from less or more distant, i.e. general perspective - i.e. it's a completelly a probability game. The density fluctuations in particle gas are always of fractal nature, becuase they can behave like another generation of fluctuations and so on. From more general perspective they would appear like clouds or Perlin noise, evoking a heaven archetype.

I'm not saying, this approach is the only way, how to interpret fractal nature of reality - but currently I don't see any better solution. At the moment, someone will introduce a more general and simpler way, I'll forget AWT concept immediately.

My opinion is, the speed of information spreading scientific community has reached it's own criticality point. Because math experts are rather weak in fuzzy connections of reality and vice-versa, nobody can see the connections points of his own and foreign ideas. By this way, a whole progress in human understanding fragmentizes itself in number of seemingly contradicting ideas and everybody is scrambled.

Prof. El Nashie's theory may appear like numerology for many physicists, but deeper insight reveals many connection points of his theories with another ones, like Lisi Garret E8 theory, string theory and so on.

A rigorous proof is missing here, simply because E-infinity theory has no defined postulate set, being based on geometrical coincidencies. But the same problem exists with string theory or even LQG theory. You can never find a postulate list of these theories on the web, so you can never decide, whether some particular insight may be derived from this theory, or not.

But knowledgable reader can see a reference to gradient driven reality and brane cosmology immediatelly. By ekpyrotic cosmology our Universe emerged as a result of brane collision. Aether theory connects this insight into so called shock wave cosmology and the dynamics of collapsar formation.

By AWT observable Universe appears like being formed by interior of black hole, formed by mutual collisions of real density gradients during collapse of dense star in form of fast expanding spherical shock waves. The remnants of this geometry can be seen in structure of dark matter streaks.

As we can see, while ad-hoced, Ek Nashie's geometry isn't completelly off topic here and it has a deeper meaning here. The structure of intersection points has a close relation to Lie E8 group, as presented in Lisi Garrets theory. Both these guys are talking about the same geometry, like brane cosmologists - they just don't know about it. They're all very productive people and simply have no time to check & reconcile ideas of others. This is an advantage of various "cranks", like me, who simply have a time to do this job.

Such situation is nothing very new in science. If we analyze history of most of important scientific theories, we will see a very deep roots and the fact, first formulations of these theories were rather formal and ad-hoced. The complete understanding of these ideas has come cradually.

By AWT such evolution is not accidental at all, because phase transition in human understanding are Lagrangian particle physics driven by the same way, like phase transitions of matter - theories are serving for intensification of causual energy spreading through human society by the same way, like formation of density gradients inside of dense particle gas. So we can consider physical theories like interesction/collision points of many other, less or vague ideas, which are becoming a source of another ideas, recursivelly.

Unfortunatelly, even whole pile of math won't help us in such understanding - we're required to have illustrative insight into situation first. But at the moment, we understood the simmilar points of many ideas, the further generalization of them becomes a way easier then before.

We should always distinguish a factual contribution of people from their personal behavior and motivations. I don't like prof. El Nashie's approach to presentation his own ideas in mainstream press, he is simply "cheating". But I can still consider his ideas as quite relevant, despite the mainstream consensus may be different in this moment. I know, Einstein has adopted many foreign ideas without notion, i know, prof. Heim was convinced nacist. But theirs theories were an ingenious products of human mind and it has no meaning to ignore them just for these controversies.

If we go deeper into history of mankind, we will often see a lot of controversy behind achievments of various individuals. In certain sense, whole the existence of observable matter is a sort of cheating. If every tiny black hole may lead to evaporation of Earth, it's apparent, our reality is metastable - we aren't supposed to be here, we should evaporate a long time before. We can talk about it, we can judge it - or we can simply incorporate this fact into our theories of reality.

Strictly speaking, from lower dimensionality of space-time at shorter scale doesn't follow, space-time has a fractal nature at all. The same observation can be made at water surface, where for shorter wavelengths we can observe a distortion of waves due the Brownian motion of water molecules.

In this way, such observation is rather evidence of particle Aether model, then the fractal nature of it and every notion of fractals is irrelevant here. BTW every decreasing of dimensionality is manifestation of ISL violation for light and gravity and Lorentz symmetry violation as well (therefore the violation of string theory, which is based on special relativity and it assumes the existence of additional dimensions instead of reduction of their number), etc...

I am not a math person at all so if I show profound ignorance of same, bear with me. Question, wouldn't space have inherent granularity to allow for the interaction of universes within the multiverse, thus giving rise to the bizarre effects of the quantum as seen, for example, by the elegant Thomas Young experiment showing the duality of light?

To me, the quantum foam (as interface) operating at Planck scale enables the many worlds of Hugh Everett to emerge and perhaps, this fractal theory could, in conjunction with quantum gravity, could explain how this amazing process happens.

Indeed, religion is emergent phenomena, being cumulative. The rational basis of Aether refutal is apparent: surface waves move with water, whereas environment for light waves doesn't move - it means, this environment doesn't exist. It's simple and apparently clean logic, despite the fact, observational perspective is completely different in both cases. It requires just a bit of belief to "understand" such logic by the same way, like motion of crowd requires only tiny step of every person in it.

Every person believes in something and it makes no problem, until these individual beliefs are different - but at the moment, everyone believes in the same thing, such belief becomes intersubjective truth, which is impossible to falsify. At the end the power of all these tiny bits of subjective stance creates an immense force of crowd and every person, which defies it is crushed with no mercy.

I am only interested in the scientific content of the work of Prof. Mohamed Elnaschie. His name, religion and nationality or sexual preferences are of no concern to me whatsoever. It is a matter of irrelevance as far as I am concerned where he publishes his work or how many papers he has written. As a scientist I am only concerned with the scientific content of what he is writing. I think the best theoretical base of his work was laid down in a four-page paper entitled: On Certain %u201CEmpty%u201D Cantor Sets and their Dimensions. A global view of his theory with an interesting connection to Godel Theorem maybe found in his 1993 paper titled: Statistical Mechanics of Multi-dimensional Cantor Sets, Godel Theorem and Quantum Spacetime. This paper was published in the Journal of the Franklin Institute, vol. 330, No. 1, pp.199-211. His other mathematical paper on the empty sets was published in Chaos, Solitons & Fractals, vol. 4, No. 2, pp 293-296, 1994. The basic idea of his work as far as I can see it is the existence of a VAK. This is a shorthand writing for the Vague Attractor of Kolmogorov. It was Rene Thom the renowned French topologist who conjectured in his acclaimed book: Structure, Stability and Morphogenesis that the VAK represents the stationary state of quantum mechanics. Elnaschie has extended the notion to mean the limit set of a dynamical fractal spacetime. His famous paper on this subject was the VAK of vacuum fluctuation, self-organization and the math spectrum in high energy physics. Following Menger and Urysohn, Elnaschie set the dimensions of the empty sets to be minus one. He then proved that a corresponding Hausdorff dimension will be Phi square where Phi stands for the Golden Mean which is roughly 0.618033989. From these simple well-established mathematical facts he was able to develop over a period of about twenty years a very comprehensive spacetime theory for high energy physics. The theory is called frequently E-Infinity Theory or Cantorian Fractal Spacetime Theory. The corresponding quantum field theory is sometimes referred to as Quantum Golden Field Theory. Elnaschie makes extensive use of all the concepts of nonlinear dynamics and the general mathematical theory of dimensions. He was able to prove that nothingness has a Hausdorff dimension equal to zero and a corresponding Menger-Urysohn dimension equal to minus infinity. His theory must have been shocking to traditional physicists who know almost nothing about the two pillars upon which his theory is based namely nonlinear dynamics and the mathematical theory of dimension developed by Poincare, Brouwer, Karl Menger and Paul Urysohn. However meantime there are many people who are using his theory. A very encouraging sign is a recent profound paper by a well-known British scientist, T.N. Palmer who is a fellow of the Royal Society. Palmers paper has been recently reviewed by Buchanan in the Newscientist. It will appear shortly in the Proceedings of the Royal Society. Palmers paper is an independent confirmation of all the fundamental results of Elnaschies theory and seems to have been developed largely independent of Elnaschies work. The history of Mohamed Elnaschie is well known. He was from the age of 30 a highly successful person in each conceivable endeavor and still is until today. The campaign against him started because of something completely different from what the superficial reader thinks. It is ridiculous to even suggest that someone would publish in his own journal so many papers without anyone noticing it. John Baez once he achieved the scandal he wanted, closed his site. Is not that an admission that he feared the long arm of the law. If you have such fear is not that an admission that you know you are wrong. Did not Nature take its allegations out of Nature online? Is that not an admission that these allegations must have been wrong? If there is a single person who never benefited financially from publishing papers in Physics, then this person must be Prof. Mohamed Elnaschie. John Baez is a close friend of Renate Loll and he is the one who drafted Schermeier of Nature and Christopher Drosser from Die Zeit. Baez, Loll and Dawker are all friends and closely connected with you know how. The whole issue is very distasteful I can assure you and no matter how long it takes, the truth will come out and someone will be telling you I told you so. But there is something more important to what Alizee is saying. To many people Werner Heisenberg is the greatest physicist of all time. For many others he is a Nazi collaborator who wanted to help Hitler get the bomb. The truth is that he is a German patriot who thought he was doing what he had to do for his country which was at war. His science and his Uncertainty relations have nothing to do with Nazism or Communism or any other isms. There is something fascistic about the internet. The paper by Dario Benedetti in Physical Review Letters is undoubtedly an important paper. It comes meantime as no surprise however that Mohamed Elnaschie was there first. Please see the paper by him titled: Quantum Groups and Hamiltonian Sets on a Nuclear Spacetime Cantorian Manifold, in Chaos, Solitons & Fractals, vol. 10, pp 1251-1256. This paper is 1999 almost ten years ago. In table 1 Elnaschie calculates what seems to me to be spectral dimensions and Hausdorff dimensions. Two other papers from the same author in the same year and same Journal seem to discuss various related topics in more details. The first is Jones%u2019 Invariant, Cantorian Geometry and Quantum Spacetime, vol. 10, No 7, pp 1241-1251. The second is The Golden Mean in Quantum Geometry, Knot Theory and Related Topics, Vol. 10 No 8, pp 1203-1307. I have started to form my own opinion about certain things. In all events the claim of priority reported in the article seems to be inaccurate. This is not a calamity but as I said it seems to explain to me certain, how should I say, anomalies.

Fascinating stuff. I mean what comes out as a conclusion, what is written in the title %u201CSpacetime Fractal Properties on the Quantum Scale%u201D. By not being a physicist myself, I would skip the parts that I do not have a secure knowledge of , but without dismissing their significance in making it possible, for the individuals to formulate their theories. Myself , armed with a few concepts at my disposal, driven by an impulse to make them meaningful for me, I have toyed with these thoughts, and I have posted them in the web. In successive, bursts of thoughts I would say, these are:

Fractal universe, fractal reality?

Fractal corridors? Existence, reality, universe is built by?

As space expands outwards since the big bang, it expands inwards too?

Observer to Planck length distance, fractal? Why we perceive continuity, out of the energy packets (quanta), the physical world is made out of?

Fractal dimensions harbour parallel worlds?

Sub-atomic particles having zero rest mass. Universe, an infinitesimally thin sheet?

Space, a result of forces? Interaction of forces? It is bound to be.

Arrived to thoughts that looks at the world, the universe as fractal, by following a path where chaos, is seen as the generator of the reality, we live in. Chaos, being ubiquitous and universal, becomes a tool to provide the explanations human individuals are seeking out.

Individuals experience the world. What experience is based upon. Would it be diferent if:

Human experience. What if, our human resolving time was on a par with the resolving time of a fast electronic device?

and how do we amass knowledge? Comes out of agreement or compromise,

Convention? What kind of convention is that? Agreement or compromise?

I did not know this was an existing branch of physics. I've been calling this the "Horton/Who" universe, and writing on it as I try to justify my sense of a scientifically justifiable God and some form of non-chaotic Universe. The thought that the "the universe" could be generally spherical and have a boundary didn't make sense- a fractal structure does, and the fractal structure could exist in an "up and down" and "sidewise" direction, too. I wonder if Dr. Seuss was not a stealth physicist, who was trying to prepare young brains for understanding fractals later in life.

I agree with Andy Somer but think that the most important paper which demonstrates what he said about Mohamed El Naschie work is the following paper. Semiclassical dimensions, quantum groups and the Cantorian manifold. Chaos, Solitons and Fractals 11(2000)pages 1137 to 1144. In this paper El Naschie introduced an amazing mathematical device which he calls semiclassical dimensions. He uses the theory of quantum groups and cantorian spacetime to drive this dimension. If he sets the Hausdorff dimension of his fundamental cantor set equal to 1, he gets the space dimension equal 3. Setting for the same set the Hausdorff dimension two third he obtains the space time dimension 4. For the Hausdorff dimension equal half one finds the fermionic dimension 5. Finally for a Hausdorff dimension equal the golden mean which means a random triadic cantor set, he obtains the dimension of a four dimensional Hilbert cube which is 4 plus phi to the power of 3. This means 4.236067977 as demonstrated very recently by Ji Huan-He in Shanghai, China. I think the reason for the success of T. N. Palmer's approach and Mohamed El Naschie's analysis lies in the fact that they stopped patching work. Rather than to go on adding little bits and pieces here and there to an old fashioned building, they started from scratch. You can go patching quantum field theory as much as you want and you will always get at best an aberration of what should have been an Apollo. I find it also mildly disturbing that someone in the world renown Perimeter Institute is not aware of fundamental contributions of T. N. Palmer and his papers which are published in the proceedings of the Royal Society as well the fundamental contribution of Mohamed El Naschie who used the aforementioned semiclassical dimension using quantum group theory.

If there is anybody who should be ashamed of himself it is the owner of this blog who knows nothing about publication, nothing about peer review and yet he finds himself fit to defame people without knowing anything. There is not a single Editor in Chief of a journal who does not publish in his own journal. Prof. El Naschie was not only a full professor and financially independent before he became the Editor in Chief of the journal he founded, but his publications are outside his professional work because he is an engineer not a mathematician nor a physicist. You have no excuse for this campaign instigated by Renate Loll the German professor who works in Holland except coming again and again to the fallacy of peer review. In England we would say peer review, my foot! Are you totally incapable of seeing the merit of a new theory and you just go on repeating any excuses to get Renate Loll out of her hopeless case of plagiarism? Can’t you read the hundreds of papers dealing with Cantor sets in high energy physics based on the work of El Naschie? You may read a recent paper by TN Palmer in the Proceedings of the Royal Society where he succinctly said ‘quantum mechanics is blind to fractals’. It is the serious work of Garnet Ord, Laurent Nottale and Mohamed El Naschie which brought an open minded and intelligent person like Prof. Palmer of Oxford to understand the shortcomings in quantum mechanics formalism using complex numbers. You should stop victimizing Mohamed El Naschie and start educating yourself. If you spend as much time on learning mathematics as you spend on gossip on the internet, there would be no problem. The entire campaign against El Naschie is motivated by a single issue which is a diversion from the plagiarism committed by Renate Loll in Scientific American a year ago. I have no doubt that you will take this comment off your site. That does not matter at all. Just wanted you to know that there are other people who know the truth which at the end always prevails. Those who fear the Court of law must have something to hide and there is nothing dishonorable at all in resorting to the force of the law to protect yourself as has been done by El Naschie. What is despicable is to call on your friend John Baez who calls himself a one man internet army to call on his army of journalists to defame and intimidate an entire family. Not only Mohamed El Naschie was subjected to harassment by a spider’s web of journalists but also his entire family, including his wife and two daughters. I guess that does not bother you as long as you can amuse yourself behind your computer screen.
