Fortasse pecunia olet interdum

(Part two is here.)

The Johann Wolfgang Goethe-Universität connection. And, for comic relief... the Loveroom connection!

This post comes from the combined efforts of Jason, Martin and Shrink.

Here's Anon, one of El Naschie's supporters, from the FQXi archive:

The central point of El Naschie’s case against Nature is that they cast doubt upon his credentials. Quirin Schiermeier lied when he said that Prof. Walter Greiner spoke to him and said what Quirin Schiermeier claims he said in the article.

Anon is referring to this statement of Schiermeier from Self-publishing editor set to retire:

But he is not, as he claims on his website, a distinguished fellow of the Institute of Physics at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt, Germany, says Walter Greiner, a former director of the institute. Greiner also says El Naschie has ignored his requests to remove his name from the list of members of the journal’s honorary editorial board. Through Cooper, El Naschie says that it would not be “appropriate” to address these concerns.

Walter Greiner and Werner Martienssen [Note: Werner Martienssen died on January 29, 2010.] are emeritus professors of physics at Johann Wolfgang Goethe-Universität, Frankfurt am Main. Schiermeier talked to Martienssen as well, for his Nature article:

A small minority of physicists cautiously recognizes the originality of El Naschie’s ideas. “They’re at least interesting,” says Werner Martiennsen, a retired physicist at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University, and one of the regional editors for Europe on Chaos, Solitons and Fractals.

Here from left to right are Martienssen, El Naschie, and Greiner at the university on June 28, 2002:

El Naschie's spokesperson who responded to Quirin Schiermeier in Self-publishing editor set to retire is named H.G. Boehm (or Böhm).

This Chaos, Solitons and Fractals article contains an acknowledgment to El Naschie and Dr. H.G. Boehm "for their many valuable suggestions that lead to a significant improvement of our manuscript."

Shrink noted that El Naschie's Web sites are registered to Anke Boehm, who we assume to be a relative, probably wife.

The whois information given above also associates the Web sites with the address St.-Erentrudis-Str. 12, which is the Hotel Schloss Reinach in Freiburg.

According to Anke Boehm (PDF), the hotel has "received many additional bookings" by virtue of their specializing in "erotic, romantic rooms". Perhaps they call these Boehm Boehm Rooms. In any case, this last observation confirms Anke Boehm's connection to the hotel at St.-Erentrudis-Str. 12. And more importantly, it is amusing.

Also note the contact information on the lower right of this page.

Here El Naschie is shown standing between Prof. Martienssen and, if I am not mistaken, erotic hotelier Anke Boehm. Click the picture for a bigger version.

OK, let's get back to the more serious business of the university connection.

This PDF is a document in German that's been mentioned twice on this blog, here and here, but it's only now we're beginning to put the pieces togther and see its significance.

The PDF clearly shows El Naschie being given some award. Martin's a native German speaker, so I asked him to read it and see whether this represented trouble for Quirin Schiermeier. He said "No, it is not bad news for Quirin Schiermeier. There were two hosts for the event, one of them the university, the other a friends organization (Förderverein). Martienssen knighted him in the name and as a distinguished fellow of that friends organization of the university, not the university, clearly."

Whew! Good. Martin also commented the sections of most interest to us here at El Naschie Watch:

[I think one reason for them to make him distinguished fellow of the friends club was to get more money from him :) Der Schuss ging auf lange Sicht gesehen wohl nach hinten los :) These are the most important passages in the whole document, for us, as I can see from here: -Martin]

Der Frankfurter Förderverein für Physikalische Grundlagenforschung

Prof. Dr.Walter Greiner

Dekan des Fachbereichs Physik

Herr Präsident Steinberg, Herr Staatssekretär Porst, Herr Ministerialdirigent Blankenburg, Herr Vizepräsident Stöcker, sehr geehrte Stifterfamilien: Herr Andreas Lyson und Frau Tanja, Herr Dr. Nikolaus Hensel und Frau Katherin, Herr Michael Baum und Frau Biserka, Herr Gernot Frank und Frau Carin, Herr Ekkehardt Sättele und Frau Eva, Herr Rainer Kamieth, liebe Promovenden, liebe Preisträger, hoch verehrte Kollegen, die wir heute hier ehren wollen, verehrte Kollegen, meine Damen und Herren.

[El Naschie is not mentioned in the keynote introduction here. -Martin]
...

[He gets his own paragraph. The three before him got more, i.e. honorary doctorates, he got a distinguished fellowship of a bunch of retired benefactors in search of money. -Martin]

Laudatio

zur Verleihung der Würde ’Distinguished Fellow’

an Prof. Dr. Mohamed El Naschie

gehalten von

Prof. Dr.Werner Martienssen

Liebe Frau El Naschie, lieber Herr El Naschie, verehrte Festversammlung.

[His wife was there (or other female relative, but that is not likely in the way how he addresses them). -Martin]
...

[10 years member of the famous DAMTP at Cambridge, today professor at Solvay Institut [...], also professor in Cairo, and multiple guest professorships all over the world. -Martin]
...

[An experimental proof for this vision has yet not be given. The obtained accuracies of his calculations can by far not be explained by chance. -Martin]

[He is close to us. In the last years, he gave multiple presentations here. Doctoral candidates have been supervised together, in Cairo and in Frankfurt. -Martin]

Seine Vorträge haben regelmäßig lebhafteste Diskussionen ausgelöst:

[His presentations triggered lively discussions on a regular basis. -Martin]

Die Einfachheit seines Ansatzes besticht und fasziniert. Aus kollegialer Debatte sind dabei Freundschaften hervorgegangen.

[Friendships arose from such debates. -Martin]

[We hope, that this distinction can contribute to an even stronger bond of you with the university and we wish that from this bond a foundation for successful joint work will arise. In other words, they want more money, if you ask me. -Martin]

I'm sure Martin's analysis is right. The idea was to flatter El Naschie with a friend's organization title in the hopes of getting a contribution, or a further contribution. But El Naschie has such chutzpah, such absolute brass balls, that he took the opportunity to claim affiliation not just with the friend's organization, but with the university itself. It shouldn't have come as a surprise that he'd do that. After all, El Naschie is the very crank who blames Israel for his not having a Nobel, and accuses Ahmed Zewail of stealing his ideas.

My candidacy is about 4 times to get the Nobel prize, but other accounts of the award which is the consent and support of Israel for the candidate and submit some concessions might be acceptable to have required some jogging or so, personal temperament, but I do not want to because I was against the Israeli policy along the line, refused to visit Israel more than once or teaching in universities, despite how many temptations that have given me, I respect the Jewish religion, Jewish and my teacher is the one who nominated me for the Nobel, but was against the Israeli policies just like me to mention my rejection of U.S. policies in the era of former President George Bush, all of this was the reason for not get the Nobel prize, In addition to the war he waged against me by an Egyptian [El Naschie's blaming Ahmed Zewail here.] who obtained the Nobel Prize for exposing a result of the plagiarism of some of my research or just jealousy scientific, and this war was not limited to the outside but inside as a result of the spread of its dominance in a bunch of owners of newspapers and satellite channels to the extent that is required in some cases, on the medium not to be anything about me or even allow me to come in and only to distort my image just because I revealed his ignorance and Mtajrth Nobel obtained hundreds of media was Itagroa as he did.

These poor well-meaning retired emeritus professors who only wanted to help raise some funds for their physics department had the embarrassing task of asking El Naschie to stop doing that. It can't have been fun for them.

Someone named Passim, in Comments on the ZEIT article, writes in a January 13, 2009 posting

Johann Wolfgang Goethe-Universität is embarrassed by him.

  3. Same here! By the way, I forgot to point out, that Greiner AND Martienssen both pointed out, that it is a fellowship of the money collectors association and not the university. Greiner says that clearly in the second paragraph quoted above. Martienssen maybe tries to hide it a bit more, Greiner says it very clearly.
    Cheers,
    Martin

  4. I wonder if the Great Man understands enough German to appreciate the difference between this "money collectors association" and the university? Maybe he thought he was honoured by the university institute?

  5. I have never heard The Great Man's German, but I don't think his possibly poor German can explain it. Surely Anke Boehm, who attended the event with him, would have been able to understand.

  6. Greiner may never have given Schiermeier an interview, that's all I can see left there in El Naschie's remaining points of attack to the article. But then again, Schiermeier never said that he asked Greiner himself. He writes "says Walter Greiner" and not "Walter Greiner told me" where he could write maybe more correctly "says Walter Greiner reportedly". That is a common way to make old news or hearsay feel a little more exciting and exclusive, but hardly a lie.

  7. I agree. To me it is looking pretty unlikely that El Naschie is going to get his ten million pounds. I don't know why he was so optimistic in the December 31 interview with Ayman al-Hakim.

  9. that's very important information, thank you.
I saw Al Naschie talking in Egyptian T.V. about A. Zewail and he said that Zewail's project isn't that important to take Nobel prize.

  10. Thanks, Max. Yes, El Naschie frequently criticizes Zewail on Egyptian TV. He just does it to get attention. He's also suing Zewail.
