El Naschie and Alexandria University

This is a summary of what we know about his Alexandria University affiliation.


He was at one time listed as a member of Alexandria University's Department of Physics (solid state). His name appeared on a list at this URL http://www.sci.alex.edu.eg/departments/Default.aspx?Dept=7 which is now a dead link.

We also know from Tarek Ibrahim that he supervised at least one PhD thesis there, probably that of Ayman Elokaby,


with the help of Walter Greiner.

There is also a December 3rd story saying a council headed by AU President Hind Hanafi made El Naschie a part-time professor at Alexandria as a distinguished scientist. I find that hard to believe, and Zahy notes that it may be a false report leaked by El Naschie. The News section of AU's website does not contain a confirmation of the story, that I can find.

Richard Holmes of University Ranking Watch tells us that for El Naschie's work to have been credited to AU in the THE ranking, it was not necessary for AU to claim his affiliation. He published papers in his vanity journal Chaos, Solitons and Fractals (CSF) with the AU affiliation claim and Thomson Reuters assumes such claims are truthful.


No academic department at Alexandria U lists him as a faculty member. He is not in physics, math, or engineering.

On the other hand, have a look at these absurd pages, Top 1% By Category and From 1 to 5% By Category. They purport to show the absolute cream of the crop of Alexandria University's recent research papers.

Of the fifteen papers in the top 1%, two are El Naschie's:

Of the 19 papers in the 1% to 5% range, nine are El Naschie's self-published numerological twaddle:

AU gives no explanation as to how these "top" papers were chosen, but the fact that CSF and IJNSNS figure prominently suggests that their high rating is based on those journals' cooked-up impact factors. IJNSNS and CSF are complete trash, but I believe they are respectively the highest and second-highest Impact Factor math journals in the world. They are in the top handful for sure.

UPDATE: A reader's father is a retired AU professor who confirms El Naschie has an emeritus-style professor appointment in the physics department there.


Because of my email to Alexandria University, Hind Hanafi cannot claim ignorance about El Naschie.

  1. My father is a retired AU professor and for what it's worth he confimed to me that the douche is now an emeritus-style professor in the physics department at AU.

    At least now that AU has hit rock bottom, there is no way but up :)
