El Naschie Watch readers on Gerardo Iovane

Thanks to all who commented and gave interesting URLs in the recent Iovane posts. Here is a synopsis of what you've said, with links enabled.

Iovane himself pipes up, no longer threatening to call Interpol, but insisting we change the blog name to Iovane Watch. Zahy taunts him, making fun of Scienza delle Informazioni e Cyber Minacce - Evoluzionismo Informatico e Genetica dei Numeri Primi or Google's English translation Information Science and Cyber Threats - Computer evolution and genetics of the Prime Numbers.

Francesco Orciuoli defends Iovane, saying

Prof. Iovane was for me a great teacher, a true master, and today I'm honored to be his colleague and I always root for him. Iovane is exemplary of style, class, elegance and kindness, whether on scientific talent are induscusse except those of humans on this blog are really amazing. Shame on you to attack people so respectable just because you have not been able to earn a place in the research institution! Prof. Francaviglia [Iovane's coauthor] is a researcher and an exceptional man of great fame.

Hansi, our go-to guy for Rössler information, gives Francesco a thorough dressing down

So it seems, you have nothing scientifically to say on that matter.

and his comment is a must-read in its entirety.

We are pleased to hear from El Naschie Watch contributor Martin Klicken who has been only lurking for a while. Martin berates Francesco for not addressing the scientific issues in Iovane's papers.

One of our regular commenters (who needs to give himself a nickname, and use it) alleges that our record-breaking traffic is due to a handful of Iovane's friends. Don't pay him any attention. He's trolling.

The Aplimat paper we looked at in Questions for Gerardo Iovane on his work has the two Iovane coauthors as editors of the journal!

A supporter of Iovane gives links to Iovane's papers of which he approves, saying

Prof. Iovane is an honest and pure man. You are wrong! He published more than 150 papers in different fields due to he makes computational and modeling. So you find applications in particle physics, nuclear physics, mechanics of medium, security, image processing and so on. If some models of other researcher are wrong this not means that also Iovane’s modeling or computing is wrong.

You are doing a very bad scouting work, since you just take paper on a single topic, that is El Naschie, while his production is interdisciplinary and wide due to the “transversality” of applications in which he can applied his models or computing algorithms.

Here's his list:

1 Modal analysis of piezoelectric bodies with voids. I. Mathematical approaches and II. Finite element simulation

2 Modeling and finite element analysis of the nonstationary action on a multi-layer poroelastic seam with nonlinear geomechanical properties

3 Some theorems about spectrum and finite element approach for eigenvalue problems for elastic bodies with voids

4 On Saint-Venant's Principle for an Inhomogeneous Curvilinear Rectangle

5 Finite element analysis of static problems for elastic media with voids

6 Fundamental solutions in antiplane elastodynamic problem for anisotropic medium under moving oscillating source

7 Moving oscillating loads in 2D anisotropic elastic medium: Plane waves and fundamental solutions

8 Inverse problem on crack reconstruction in the elastic half-space: anti-plane case, SAINT-VENANT'S PRINCIPLE IN DYNAMIC POROUS THERMOELASTIC MEDIA WITH MEMORY FOR HEAT FLUX, and SPATIAL BEHAVIOR IN DYNAMICAL THERMOELASTICITY BACKWARD IN TIME FOR POROUS MEDIA

9 Anti-plane inverse problem for inclined cracks in the elastic half-space

10 A mixed boundary-value problem for the wave equation in a stratified medium for high-frequency oscillations

11 Inverse problem on crack reconstruction in the elastic half-space: anti-plane case

Shrink goes through the list and notes that the articles are mostly self-cited or not cited at all.

The Iovane supporter continues

His expertise is on modeling, simulations and algorithms, he is not a theoretical physicist. For this reason he obtained his research position in mathematical-physics, and professorship in mathematical analysis. In his scientific community he is very appreciated as very eclecticism and good scientist. He makes beautiful application in industrial context of security, image processing applied to recognition, decision support systems, and so on and he obtain formal recognition from Italian Institutions. He is a Knight of Italian Republic. This is a honor or a recognition given to very honest and pure man which spend time not only for himself but for the State, and people. This prize is given directly by the President of Italian Republic.

See Iovane's Cavaliere Ordine al Merito della Repubblica Italiana.

I found this is information for you, since I belive that Prof. Iovane does not merit the place and the image that you are giving on your blog. You must distinguish him from other people that you considered in the past and that I do not know.

Hansi, a physicist with some mathematical background, examines Iovane's paper Dynamical Systems on Cantorian Spacetime and Applications. He concludes

If I did not know the authors were actually professors, I would think they were undergraduate students who dramatically overrate their abilities and then try something wrong.

But Hansi also says some of Iovane's papers stand a chance of being correct. When he stays in the area in which he was trained, his work cannot be dismissed out-of-hand. He gives these examples of plausible papers: On the spatial behaviour in dynamics of porous elastic mixtures (PDF), Reciprocal and Variational Principles in Micropolar Thermoelasticity (PDF) and Saint-Venant’s principle in dynamical porous thermoelastic media with memory for heat flux (PDF), all from the arXiv. Other unobjectionable-looking Iovane papers include On Stress Analysis for Cracks in Elastic Materials with Voids (PDF) accepted by International Journal of Engineering Science, and Numerical Treatment of Hypersingular Integral Equations with Application to Crack Mechanics from Proceedings of the 3rd Russian Conference on Elasticity, 2003, Rostov-on-Don, Russia. On direct numerical treatment of hypersingular integral equations arising in mechanics and acoustics, Acta Mechanica Volume 162, Numbers 1-4, pp 99-110, also looks OK. Hansi says Iovane shoukld stick with what he knows. I agree.

An anonymous commenter thinks Iovane's image processing papers are "a scam to fool some naive investors".

Zahy, clearly tired of people giving Iovane the benefit of the doubt, points to the elephant in the livingroom:

Gerardo Iovane has produced about 22 papers based on El Naschie E-infinity theory and solely published on Chaos, Solitons and Fractals (CS&F) without realizing that El Naschie's theory is nonsense. That only means that the great Gerardo Iovane doesn't know physics nor mathematics.

and he reminds readers of the Jan Hendrik Schön scandal of a decade ago.

El Naschie's Rosa Al-Youssef column is up for Tuesday, January 11. Policy to weaken Egypt. Original Arabic or Google's English translation.

First column of a series. El Naschie remembers fondly that he was "invited to lecture at the Library of Maadi, which is under the honorary presidency of Egypt's First Lady Suzanne Mubarak." He was invited by Professor «Yasser Osman» and Dr «Karima Al-Ansari» whom he flatters with flowery language. He was accompanied by his beloved friend, the great Egyptian writer Gamal El-Ghitani. El Naschie says El-Ghitani wrote about his speech in the Journal of the Republic on November 28, 2003 and December 15, 2003 in the Journal of Voice of Maadi.

El Naschie summarizes what he said: Egypt needs to double efforts in education to overcome weakness inflicted on Egypt by the West, beginning as far back as the West's thwarting the rise to power of Muhammad Ali Pasha (1769-1849).

  5. By the way it would be great if you gave yourself a nickname. So many people use "Anonymous" I get confused. This advice applies to everyone.

If ElNaschie and Iovane can occasionally figure out how to include a scale on a vertical axis, maybe you can too (unless you've something to hide)?

  7. Thank you. Slipper.Mystery has made many good comments over the months, sometimes supporting and sometimes criticizing El Naschie Watch. He says what he thinks, and keeps us honest. As to our traffic in absolute numbers, it's small but larger than he thinks. For a blog whose scope is limited to Mohamed El Naschie, I think it's phenomenal.

  8. The papers of Iovane and coauthors concerning elasticity and acoustics are competely correct. The reason is that these papers were written not by him, but by his coauthors, mainly by M.Sumbatyan.

  9. I am not surprised.

  10. Check out this paper:

You may be surprised to know that "Greeks introduced formally the “Golden Man”... (reminds me of the "polar beers").

At pag.8, El-Naschie is being mentioned in a very celebrative way: "This is a sweeping generalization of what Einstein did in his General Theory of Relativity."!!!!

Even more interesting is to read the acknowledgements: I wonder if INFN has switched from high energy physics to golden mean research.
