My email to CHAOS 2011, Crete

For background, read CHAOS 2011, Crete. I just sent this:

To the organizers of the 4th Chaotic Modeling and Simulation International Conference, 31 May to 3 June, Agios Nikolaos, Crete, Greece.

Dear CHAOS 2011,

Your Committees page claims that Ji-Huan He is "Editor of Int. Journal of Nonlinear Sciences and Numerical Simulation".

That is not true. Ji-Huan He was fired by the new publisher, De Gruyter. Numerous journals in fact have fired Ji-Huan He from their editorial boards because of the scandals he's involved in.

It does not make sense to list Ji-Huan He as an Honorary Committee member in any case. He does not lend prestige to your conference, only comic relief.

Please let me know if you have any questions about Ji-Huan He.

Best regards,

Jason of El Naschie Watch

  1. Oh dear, how can such a seemingly serious conference include a crackpot in its Honorary Committee? This is again evidence that there's something seriously wrong about how the scientific community is organized...

  2. Whoa!!

Please note that David Ruelle is a scientist of the highest standards.

Ruelle and Takens came up with a new -- experimentally verified -- model of turbulence. Yep, bifurcations and a period of three and chaos and all. Yep, it took over where Landau's theory ended (yep, theeeee Landau).

Ruelle's prize list reads something like:
    Poincare medal,
    Boltzmann medal,
    Peano medal.

Those particular prizes don't come in crackerjack boxes.

  3. Strange, there is also a Verhulst on the CHAOS 2011 board.

I wonder if this Verhulst is related to Pierre Verhulst, the discoverer of the Verhulst and logistic equations.

That would be cool, given that it was Verhulst's equation (aka logistic difference equation) that Feigenbaum was originally playing with when he found his two constants.

  4. I think the way He got on the Honorary Committee was to advertise himself as Editor-in-Chief of a journal with a huge Impact factor. Organizers took that at face value.

CHAOS 2011 has not written back.

There's so much wrong with it, I don't even know where to begin. What stupid idealistic young me decided academia is a worthy career?

  6. Anonymous,

You're only jaded because you were told as a child that adults are kind and honest. The sooner you become just another one of the bitter misanthropic vipers, the better off you'll be.

Or you could just say fuck em, get a Starbucks and a cookie for a snack, and then try your best to change them from the inside out?
