Military support for El Naschie candidacy?!

A bizarre story appeared today in Al Mashhad. Ayman Kamal reports from Cairo that the military junta currently running Egypt, the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF), is considering supporting El Naschie since Nobel Prize winning chemist Ahmed Zewail apparently isn't in the running, and the SCAF wants an alternative to the Muslim Brotherhood. Original Arabic or Google's English translation. Interesting passages are green and my comments are [red].

Google's English translation with my attempts at interpretation and incorporating Hossam's corrections:
After the rejection of Zewail... El Naschie to run for the presidency with "military" support
11-2-2012 | 11:19
Cairo - Ayman Kamal

Sources familiar to Al Mashhad ["the Scene", the name of the newspaper] said that the declaration of the scientist, Dr. Mohamed El Naschie regarding his candidacy for the presidency came in coordination with the military junta [SCAF] who wishes to support the scientific character does not carry any political orientations [i.e. baggage, but he has terrible baggage, like being a charlatan] to contest the presidential election, decides to open the door to run in the tenth of March [the nomination due date].

The sources pointed out that the support of the Military Council for El Naschie came after the rejection of Dr. Ahmed Zewail to run for the presidency, pointing out that there are attempts to persuade the Muslim Brotherhood to support El Naschie, but that the group [M.B.] sees little chance [for El Naschie] compared to other candidates.

El Naschie is seventy years old and is currently choosing the team to manage his campaign and some believe that he will lag behind the rest of the other candidates.

El Naschie announced his preference to choose a vice-president who would help his candidacy gain the support of the Muslim Brotherhood.

El Naschie is scheduled to meet a number of members of the general guidance office of the group [the M.B.] this week in an attempt to gain their support.

This is an important story, so if my interpretations are wrong, please correct me in the comments.

  1. Two corrections:

    1. Second paragraph: It says that the SCAF is attempting to persuade the M.B to support El Naschie, but the M.B sees little chance compared to other candidates [not the SCAF].

    2. Last paragraph, again he's meeting with the muslim brotherhood not the SCAF. It's actually not officers of the general guidance, it's members of the general guidance office, which is sort of the top office in the M.B.

Also in the second to last paragraph, what is said is that he announced that he will choose a vice-president as a way to impress/gain support of the muslim brotherhood, not distinguishing himself from them. But I don't understand how. Probably they meant a vice-president from the brotherhood ? I don't know.

An unimportant correction: sources familiar with "the scene". The scene is english for Al Mashhad, the name of the newspaper.

  2. Hossam, you rule! Corrections made.

I cannot believe the attention his candidacy is getting, and the seriousness with which it is being taken. I'm having a hard time keeping up with the stories.

  3. To tell you the truth, even though it seems likely that the SCAF would like to play ball with a hypocrite like El Naschie, I am taking everything in this article with a grain of salt. I don't really think they believe he stands any chance.

But I am really looking forward to the commencement of the elections. If the media people do their homework, he will be humiliated on national T.V.

Yes, a thousand times yes. Khairy Ramadan is the only interviewer to show any skepticism toward the great man so far. If the media decide to dig for dirt, they won't have to dig very far.
